An Unhealthy Workforce Creates an Impact on Your Business

Bridgend, South Wales (PRWeb) January 9, 2007 -- Concerned over a recent report that South Wales is one of the unhealthiest places in the UK, therapists Jacqui Malpass and Graeme Layzell decided it was time for action and put together '6 weeks to a new you' and 'A New You' workshops.

The report from CACI and TNS states that "data from the first ever HealthACORN report by CACI and TNS has revealed shocking evidence of the impact that lifestyle choices will have on local health resources. More than ever before, poor diet and exercise levels are putting health authorities under pressure with those in Wales struggling most."

Not only are the health authorities struggling, businesses are too. Unhealthy food and lifestyle choices can lead to a greater risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes etc. Which lead to lost working days.

Research from MIND (The mental health charity) reveals that stress in the workplace accounts for 12.8 million lost working days and costs the UK £100bn a year in lost earnings. They go on to say that "Stress costs 10 per cent of the UK's Gross National Product - yet fewer than 10 per cent of companies have official policy to tackle it"

People who are stressed often turn to unhealthy food and lifestyle choices which can lead to a greater risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes etc.

Says Jacqui Malpass, "Companies should be on the look out for staff who show signs of changes in eating habits or other lifestyle changes as they could be showing signs of stress."

"By putting action plans into place, like a 2 day course which teaches staff about nutrition, how to break negative habits, reduce stress, changing attitudes and behaviours, companies can start to help their staff and ensure that workplace stress does not lead to further health related problems and 'sickie' days off.'
